Apprenticeships in the Renewables Sector

Apprenticeships in the Renewables Sector

Recently, we celebrated the work anniversary of our apprentice Henry Hunt, who has now spent 1 year with us at Rix Renewables.

Henry’s apprenticeship is being run through The Grimsby Institute of Further & Higher Education where he is studying the Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technicians course. He has been working closely with the team, both onshore and offshore as an Apprentice Renewables Engineer and has been involved in our statutory inspections, crane maintenance, and offshore cleaning operations. It continues to be a pleasure to have him on board.

Meet the Team

When asked about pursuing a career in the renewables sector, Henry explained that:

“After leaving school I decided to learn a trade and started a job tiling. This gave me a taste for manual work and really homed in my eye for detail and precision. I knew I wanted to be an engineer and that combined with being a keen environmentalist, renewables were the only way to go.

I applied to Rix Renewables knowing they had a vision to facilitate the growth and development of the renewable energy industry. I am now 1 year into my apprenticeship, learning every day, and loving every minute! I am very excited with my progress as an Apprentice Renewables Engineer and look forward to seeing what the future holds for renewable energy.”

In regard to the future of the Renewables sector, there couldn’t be a better time to be joining the industry. Last month, we covered the UK reaching an impressive wind power milestone and apprenticeships in the renewables sector have become a popular talking point.

A recent survey has found that those aged 13-19 are more likely to pursue careers in the medicine, social work, and green industries as they would prioritise working in roles that made a difference. According to this survey, 49% of those polled would like a job that involves sustainability.

With the IEA recently finding that employment in the clean energy sector is on the rise, and this rise exceeds the decline in fossil fuel-related positions, we are definitely seeing the job sector move swiftly towards renewable power sources. This makes it an exciting time to be pursuing a career in the industry. As such, we are seeing young people that would have previously been geared toward the fossil fuel industry instead coming to renewables.

Looking back on Henry’s 1st year with Rix Renewables, our Director, Lee Blanchard has said:

“At the interview, Henry’s drive and passion stood out immediately, making his appointment an obvious one. Since joining Rix Renewables, Henry has immersed himself in the culture of the business and has quickly found his feet in the offshore wind sector.

His desire to learn, alongside his hard work ethic is a great example to all around and has made sure he is already an integral part of the team.”
